How to Maintain Your Electronics' Value (Phone, Laptop, Console)
Electronics are expensive but lose value quickly. A smartphone you buy today for €1,000 will be worth just €300-400 in two years. With the right approach, you can significantly reduce that depreciation. Here are our tips.
Use a case and screen protector
It sounds simple, but it makes an enormous difference. A phone or tablet without scratches or dents is worth 20-30% more than one with damage. Invest in a good case and screen protector from day one. It costs you €20-40 but saves hundreds of euros at resale.
Keep the original packaging
Box, manual, charging cable, earbuds – save everything. A complete product with original packaging fetches 5-15% more. This is especially true for Apple products where buyers value the 'unboxing experience'. Store the box in a cupboard, it takes up little space.
Mind the battery
The battery is often the first component to wear out. Don't always charge your phone or laptop to 100% – stopping at 80% significantly extends battery lifespan. Avoid wireless charging when not necessary (generates more heat) and don't use cheap chargers. A healthy battery increases resale value.
Keep software up to date
Devices with the latest software updates are worth more. They're safer, faster, and supported for longer. An iPhone that will receive years more updates is worth more than one nearing end-of-life.
Sell at the right time
Don't wait too long. Electronics lose value every month. The best times to sell are: just before a new model is announced, at the start of the school year (laptops), or around Black Friday (game consoles). The sooner you sell, the more you get.
