Selling a Car Without MOT: Is It Possible and What Are the Rules?
Your MOT (APK in the Netherlands) has expired and you want to sell your car. Is that allowed? The short answer: yes, it is. But there are a few things to keep in mind. In this article, we explain the rules.
What does the law say?
In the Netherlands, a car may be sold without a valid MOT. The buyer must be informed. You cannot drive a car without MOT on public roads, unless you're driving to an MOT testing station. The buyer must arrange transport or drive directly to inspection.
Impact on the selling price
An expired MOT lowers the selling price. Buyers don't know what the inspection will reveal and factor in the risk. Expect €200-500 less. Unless the inspection has just expired and the car is in good condition.
Should you get an MOT first?
That depends on the situation. If you expect your car to pass the MOT, it's often worth doing (cost: €20-50). A valid MOT increases buyer confidence and yields more. If you expect expensive repairs, it may be better to sell without MOT.
Selling to a professional buyer
Professional buyers also purchase cars without MOT. At Verkoop24.nu, an expired MOT is no problem. We assess your car based on its actual condition and make you a fair offer. We even pick up the car.
Important: deregistration
Whether your car has an MOT or not: don't forget to deregister the car with the RDW. This prevents you from remaining liable for fines or taxes after the sale.
