Selling a Classic Car: What Is Your Vintage Vehicle Worth?

Selling a classic car is a special experience. Whether it's a Citroën DS, Volkswagen Beetle, or Mercedes-Benz W123: classic cars have their own market with unique rules. In this article, we share everything you need to know.

When is your car a classic?

In the Netherlands, a car is officially considered a classic (oldtimer) when it's 40 years or older. Cars between 15 and 40 years are sometimes called 'youngtimers'. From 40 years, special rules apply for road tax and MOT requirements.

How is the value determined?

A classic car's value is determined differently from a regular car. Factors include: rarity of the model, state of restoration, originality (original parts), documentation and history, and emotional value and popularity. A specialised appraiser can provide an accurate valuation.

Restoration: worth it or not?

A restored classic is worth more than an unrestored one, but restoration costs often exceed the added value. Unless you have a very rare model. A good rule of thumb: if restoration costs exceed 60% of the expected sale price, it's often wiser to sell in its current state.

Finding the right buyers

You don't sell classic cars via Marktplaats (though you can). The best channels are: specialised classic car websites, classic car clubs and associations, fairs and events, and specialised dealers. The right buyer is willing to pay a fair price for a well-documented classic.

Paperwork and transfer

When selling a classic car, it's especially important to gather all documentation: original registration certificate, service history, restoration documentation, photos of the restoration, and any certificates of authenticity. The more complete the documentation, the more your car is worth.
