Selling Gold and Silver: Current Prices and Tips for 2026

The gold price has risen significantly in recent years. Have gold coins, jewellery, or silverware lying around? It might be a good time to sell. But how do you know what you have and what it's worth?

The gold price: how does it work?

The gold price is determined internationally and fluctuates daily. The price is expressed per troy ounce (31.1 grams). For jewellery and coins, the price per gram is more relevant. Keep in mind that as a private seller, you'll never receive the full spot price – buyers take a margin of 5-15%.

Recognising carat rating

Gold comes in different purities: 24 carat (999/1000 pure), 22 carat (916), 18 carat (750), 14 carat (585), and 9 carat (375). Check the hallmark on your jewellery or coin. No hallmark? A gold dealer can test the purity with a touchstone or electronic device.

Selling silver

Silver is worth less per gram than gold, but collectible objects like silver cutlery sets, candlesticks, or antique silverware can exceed material value. Silver often has a 925 hallmark (sterling silver). The silver price fluctuates more than gold.

Gold coins and bars

Investment gold (Krugerrands, Maple Leafs, Philharmonics, gold bars) is the easiest to sell and yields the most relative to the gold price. The margin is smaller than for jewellery because the purity and weight are fixed. Always keep proof of purchase.

Beware of scams

Unfortunately, there are many dodgy gold buyers. Watch out: never accept home visits from gold buyers. Don't sell to the first buyer you find. Always compare multiple offers. Have your gold weighed on a certified scale. A trustworthy buyer is transparent about the gold price and their margin.
