Selling Your Phone: How to Get the Most for Your Old Smartphone

Dutch people buy a new phone every 2-3 years on average. That means millions of old smartphones are gathering dust in drawers. What a waste, because your old iPhone or Samsung is still worth quite a bit. In this article, we explain how to get the most out of it.

When to sell for the best price?

Timing matters. Your phone's value drops fastest in the first months after purchase and around the launch of a new model. Ideally sell before the announcement of the new model. An iPhone 15 loses significant value once the iPhone 16 is announced.

Wiping data: a mandatory step

Before selling your phone, it's essential to erase all personal data. For iPhone: go to Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content. For Android: Settings > System > Reset Options > Erase All Data. Don't forget to back up first and unlink your Apple ID or Google account.

What determines the value?

The main factors are: brand and model, storage capacity (64GB vs 256GB makes a big difference), screen and housing condition, battery health, and whether the device is unlocked. A phone with a cracked screen is worth 40-60% less.

Comparing sales channels

Marktplaats often yields the most but takes time. Refurbished platforms like Renewd or Swappie offer convenience but lower prices. Trade-in at Apple or Samsung is easiest but yields the least. A professional buyer offers the best balance between price and convenience.

Tips for a higher selling price

Clean your phone and remove the case. Keep the original box and accessories – this can add 5-10%. Take good photos in daylight. Be honest about any defects.
